Home Away

What is it like to stay away from home for the first time? Thousands of students, each year, leave the comforts of their homes to go and study outside. The experience of each will be unique and any generalization would be futile. Going to an alien land is scary, to say the least. Even a place close to home, but at a distance of say, 402 kms, is far away as it means staying away from near and dear ones. Increasingly, this is becoming a middle-class reality as the quest for something better pulls you away from loved ones. Education, and educational institutions are drawing students from far and near as they offer better hope and opportunities.
The new place is different, obviously, and takes time getting used to. Some people take to the place immediately, some take a while and a few never accept the change and keeping harping about their home town. Manipal, like Bangalore, is home to many educational institutions and therefore draws thousands of students from allover. The quality of education in these institutions is the reason for young adults to travel thousands of kilometers and to make it their second home. Every place has its own culture and one needs to adapt quickly to the change in culture to be able to manage in a new environment.
Friendships are forged and sometimes they last for a lifetime. It is always a wonder how some people become friends, having nothing in common. One gives so much in the relationship based on just trust. Friends are a social need that cannot be wished away. We do choose our friend circle with care and nurture the same over time. It is these friends who stand by you in times of need- financial, emotional and intellectual. Who would have thought that an Indian could be friends with an Indonesian, a Pakistani and an American at the same time. Being away from home does have its own advantages. Remembering all my friends, Happy friendship Day!
